Rosa Schneider

(born: 28th May 1896)

Rosa Channa Schneider was born on 28 May 1896 in Sidra/Poland. Her marriage certificate indicates a Lithuanian nationality. Rosa married Jehoshua Beck on 17 November 1922 in Leipzig. Jehoshua was born to Chaim and Riska Beck in Vilna on 13 January 1899.

The family emigrated from Vilna to Leipzig after the First World War. Jehoshua worked as a furrier, a craftsman who processed animal skins into fur goods. The trade in animal skins for fur clothing boomed in Leipzig in the 19th and early 20th centuries, so Jehoshua’s trade was very lucrative and he ran a successful fur factory. Rosa and Jehoshua had two children, Zvi and Esther, who were born in Leipzig in 1926 and 1930. The family lived at Lessingstraße 20. To escape the repression of the National Socialists, Rosa and Jehoshua emigrated with their children to Haifa/Israel in 1935. In doing so, they were able to save the lives of their family. Rosa died in a car accident in Haifa.
